Join us for the Connecticut leg of a 50 State motorcycle run for families and survivors of officers lost in the line of duty.
Ride4Cops was created by NIC CEO Harry Herington, who as a former law enforcement officer recognized the need to support the friends and families that fallen officers leave behind. During his career in law enforcement, Harry remembered the promise he made to his partners, “If something happens to me, take care of my family.” That promise continues to take place today across the country between thousands of law enforcement officers.
Ride4Cops takes Harry’s personal pledge to each State Capitol to raise awareness of the inherent dangers of law enforcement and to support survivors. Along the journey, he rides the Memorial Bike, a customized Harley-Davidson that has become a traveling memorial to our fallen heroes.
Today Ride4Cops has traveled coast-to-coast from the Statehouse in Trenton, New Jersey, to the Capitol in Honolulu, Hawaii. And, the ride continues as Ride4Cops fulfills its goal of visiting each state capital in the United States. With each ride donations are collected and remain in the local community to help the spouses, parents, siblings, and children of officers killed in the line of duty. Harry Herington is a man of vision and dedicated to public service. Nearly 20 years ago he helped create NIC, as he puts it “before the Internet was cool,” with a vision to harness online technologies to improve citizen and business interactions with government. As the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Mr. Herington leads the Company as it manages 25 state and two federal agency web portals, and has developed more than 7,500 online services that make government interactions more transparent, efficient, convenient, and mobile. Under his leadership NIC has grown to become a nationally respected company, and is ranked 20th on Forbes’ list of the “100 Best Small Companies in America.”
Before joining NIC, Mr. Herington began his public service career in law enforcement in Texas and Kansas, later serving as the Associate General Counsel for the League of Municipalities. It is this dedication to public service and his law enforcement past that led him to found Ride4Cops in 2009. This initiative is focused on increasing the awareness of the inherent dangers of law enforcement and providing support to the families of fallen officers. As a former law enforcement officer, Mr. Herington understands from personal experience that an officer’s biggest concern isn’t falling in the line of duty, but what will happen to his or her family if that occurs. To date he has taken that message to 20 states with the goal of riding the customized Memorial Bike Harley-Davidson to a Ride4Cops rally at each State Capitol in the nation. As he leads by example, Mr. Herington works to create a strong culture of community involvement at NIC. He believes we can each make a difference in the world around us, and encourages employees to give generously of their time and talents in their community.
Mr. Herington holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wichita State University and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Kansas School of Law.
